"As part of the ongoing nationwide celebrations of Windrush 75, four members of the black community, Allison Bishop, Norma Dixon, Jacqueline Joseph-Grotefeld and Brenda Henderson of St. Andrew’s Church, Sandhurst Rd, Catford put together their own action-packed Windrush Celebration which took place on Saturday September 9th 2023 at 6.30pm in St Andrew’s Hall. It was important to them and their community to acknowledge and celebrate what the Afro-Caribbean community contributed to Britain when they were invited to "help make Britain Great again" 75 years ago. This was a feast of truly authentic visual and aural presentations, including a steel pan band, quadrille dancing, poetry, state-of-the-art Caribbean cooking, gospel singing and many more surprises. The evening featured the premiere of this film, created by church member Tom Steadman, and made in collaboration with local Caribbean elders and residents of nearby care homes - further documenting and recording the outstanding contributions and memories of the post-Windrush community to various areas including Catford and Lewisham Borough. The whole event, to which the Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres, and the local councillor of Hither Green, Mark Ingleby, attended, marks the first time in over 40 years that the African-Caribbean diaspora of the congregation has entirely organised and funded an event, which did not disappoint. The event went further to put a further crucial part of Lewisham’s diverse and creative borough on the map."
